Waterloo School is a Y1-6 (roll 550) multi-cultural (23 ethnic groups) suburban
school set in Lower Hutt. We have an aspirational culture with a belief in holistic
education (developing the whole child) with an overarching desire to promote life-long
learning and a growth mind-set in all our staff and students. We wish to enable students
to incrementally take charge of their own learning and thus the concept of Learner Agency
(empowering independence) is central to our pedagogy. We encourage our students to
develop ‘inquiry as a disposition’ and have a school curriculum that values questions above
answers, creativity above fact regurgitation, individuality above uniformity and excellence
above standardized performance. Our priorities for 2018 are to build on the progress
achieved around promoting Wellbeing for Success through PB4L and Learner Agency across
the school and continue the excellent progress made this year on upskilling ourselves in the
latest pedagogy around teaching mathematics. We have also introduced aspects of learning
through play in our Junior School and this will continue in 2018.
